How flame effect aroma diffusers work

The flame effect diffuser is the one people ask about when they see it running. It is a light effect and an ultrasonic mist, not a fire. Here is what is actually happening, and how to get the best from one.

It is a mist and a light, not a flame

A flame effect diffuser is an ultrasonic diffuser. A small plate vibrates at high frequency and breaks water and fragrance oil into a fine, cool mist. A light sits under the mist chamber and shines up through that mist, which reads as a flickering flame. Nothing is burning and nothing gets hot.

How the ultrasonic part works

You fill the chamber with water to the marked line and add a few drops of fragrance oil. The vibrating plate turns the water into mist, and the mist carries the oil into the room. Our Santorini atomiser covers the same ground with a shell effect instead of a flame.

Because there is no heat, the scent is cool and light rather than the thick throw a candle gives. It fills a normal room well and struggles in a very large or open one, which is true of every ultrasonic diffuser at this size.

The flame and the colour change

The flame look comes from the mist plus a warm light underneath it. On the model we stock the light can also cycle through colours, so you can leave it on the amber flame setting or let it change through the spectrum.

The birdsong

The flame diffuser we sell plays birdsong when it switches on. Some people love it and some turn it off within a minute, and both are reasonable. It is a sound at switch on, not a continuous soundtrack.

Power and placement

It runs from USB rather than a mains socket, so it works from a laptop, a power bank or a spare USB plug. That makes a shelf or a desk away from the wall easy. Keep it on a flat, stable surface, out of the reach of children and pets, and away from direct sunlight.

Using and cleaning it

Run it down rather than leaving water sitting in the chamber for days. Empty any leftover water, wipe the chamber and the plate with a soft cloth, and let it dry before refilling. Unplug it before you clean it. A little routine care keeps the mist strong and the plate working.

What we stock

The Flame Effect Aroma Diffuser (£30.26) is the one in the title: flame light, colour change, birdsong and USB power. If you want the light without the flame, the Santorini Atomiser (£25.04) covers the same ground with a soft shell effect.
